Commandant’s Message
Welcome aboard! Thanks for visiting the online home of the Rome Marines. Officially we are the Edward L. Smith, Jr. Detachment 245 of the Marine Corps League. The detachment is named after PFC Edward L. Smith. Jr. - a native of Rome, New York - who fought on Guadalcanal Island with the 1st Marine Division in World War II. PFC Smith was also the recipient of our nations second highest decoration, the Navy Cross. The Rome Marines are a proud Gold Star Sponsor of the Marine Helping Marines - Wounded Marines Program, and are a member of the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce.
Although the detachment was founded in the 1940s, it went through several periods of inactivity and was reconstituted in August 2008. Although it is considered one of the newer detachments in New York, it is also one of the more active ones. Currently we have a membership of nearly eighty Marines who participate in a wide range of programs such as the Wounded Warrior Program and the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys For Tots Program, among many other programs that benefit the local community.
We have assembled an incredible group of Marines in our detachment that cross generational boundaries. We have Marines from every period since World War II that are members. Our motto “Old Corps values, with a modern vision” is indicative of our collective ideology in the detachment. We cling to the cores values we all subscribed to when we first put on the Eagle Globe and Anchor, but have a vision of a more modern Marine Corps League that is dynamic and adapts to a changing constituency in the digital era. Again, welcome to our site. If you are a Marine or former Marine in the Rome, New York area consider joining this incredible group of Marines. Our email is info@mclrome.com, or phone 315 796-6380. Applications for membership may be found in the “downloads” area of this web site. Applications for membership may be mailed to the Commandant, E. L. Smith Jr. Detachment 245, 307 Adams Street, Rome, NY 13440 . . .Semper Fidelis.
